Today's blog post is all about how STAR represents a coming-of-age movie! Let me give you a little breakdown as to why! 

Is It Stereotypical?

  • The answer to this question is yes and no. Sarah, Emily and I obviously wanted to film the movie opener in a way that would let the audience know that it was a coming of age movie. However, we didn't want to to be 100% Stereotypical and wanted to make some changes that way it could spice up the plot and make it more intriguing to the audience. 
  • For example, There aren't a million movies that start out with a rock star teenage girl crying in a dressing room and then flash back to a normal life. However, there are a million of coming of age movies that have a teenage girl or boy waking up and getting ready for school.
  • Some similarities between STAR and other coming of age movies would be the scenes of Juliet getting ready for school/ waking up. Here, take a look:

Waking Up For School!

  • This picture is from the Disney Channel Movie: 16 Wishes. It is one of the typical coming of age movies that starts with a 16 year-old girl waking up to start her day, which happens to be her 16th birthday. 

  • This shot is similar to the one of 16 wishes because it is filmed right as Juliet is waking up to go to school. A difference is that it isn't her 16th year old birthday but it still gets the same message across.

"One Bite Breakfast"

  • The "One Bite Breakfast" scene was one of the scenes that my group and I knew we had to include! If you aren't familiar with this scene, it's basically where the main character takes literally one bite of what ever breakfast is provided and then goes on their way for school. This picture os taken from The Kissing Booth Movie where the main character, Elle, takes one bite of toast and then goes on her way to school.
  • We recreated this scene by having sarah sit down for a full plate of breakfast and only end up taking one small bite of a blueberry. We wanted to emphasize  that she has no appetite and just wants to get on her way for school. After sarah takes one bite of the blueberry she gets up and tell her mom its time to go to school. 

"Coming-Of-Age"

  • All in all, I feel that our movie opener is definitely stereotypical to the certain extent that we wanted to be! We want to channel all that coming of age energy that goes into making those movies but we also wanted to make some slight changes to be different from all the basic movies that are out there.

You Know You Love Opening Scenes
